When floods happen, a rug will absorb all of the water it comes in contact with. This water is not pure- it has mixed with everything that was in its path before coming in contact with your rug.

There are steps you can take to minimize the amount of damage water and floods do to your rug. The first thing to do is to extract the excess water out of the rug. You can blot it with towels or cloth. If you have access to a water extractor, and you know how to use it, use it. If you have access to a water extractor, but you are not 100% sure on how to use it, do not use it. The damage from flooding can be reversed. The damage from mishandling a rug with a water extractor might not be so easily fixed.

Soaked rugs have a tendency to have color run, color bleeding, mold, and a musty smell. The water will also weaken the foundation. All of these things can damage your rug permanently if your rug is not brought in for professional restoration.

If your rug is insured, you may not have to pay for flood damage restoration services at all. Your insurance may cover the cost of the service for you.
